ROKETSUZOME REIMAGINED

INFO
Roketsuzome Reimagined explores the possibilities of the traditional Japanese wax-resist dyeing technique Roketsuzome, in collaboration with Kyoto-based workshop Shobien-Kyoto.
The technique is characterised by a unique duality: the precision of carefully applied wax patterns and the unpredictable crackling effect that emerges as the wax breaks during the dyeing process. This interplay between control and chance forms the starting point of the collaboration.
By introducing folds into the wax-coated fabric, a new approach to pattern-making is developed, allowing intentional gestures and unpredictable outcomes to come together. The resulting patterns reveal and emphasise the underlying principle of Roketsuzome: where cracks appear in the wax, colour enters the fabric.
This exploration has resulted in a collection of curtains, in which carefully placed folds create graphic lines that make the process of Roketsuzome visible. Bringing together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary experimentation, the collection offers a new perspective on the expressive possibilities of this centuries-old technique.
